The Art Gallery of South Australia

What you can expect

Almost as much of a drawcard for its structure as it is its contents, the Art Gallery of South Australia boasts one of the country's best displays of visual culture all housed in a lovely building with a cosy, intimate feel. The gallery features an eclectic mix of both old and new art housed within its older, colonial-style walls, and is an accurate reflection of the South Australian people’s strong artistic heritage; the region has produced some of Australia’s most renowned artists, and the care and variety put into this particular attraction exemplifies that to the fullest. The layout of the Art Gallery of SA is also quite unconventional, with rooms that tend to meander in to one another rather than sticking to a strict path, which leads to a more organic and relaxed feel to the proceedings. While the gallery features frequent specialist exhibitions throughout the year which you’ll have to pay for, general admission is free and provides you with the chance to encounter enough variety that you can easily avoid paying for the periodic exhibits yet still come away with a satisfying half-day or so worth of artistic entertainment.
